after playing a couple of the mexican jazz basses lately, I would recommend one of them to myself for the money, craftmanship, tones. I quit playing Fenders in the mid 70`s due to some of the craftmanship issues and the waning integrity in bass production.
The new products appear to be of excellent and consitent craftmanship. I`ve played the American jazz and the "PJ" and a couple of the mexican imports and for the money the mexican is outstanding. I played a new one in a studio in nashville a few months ago and it was fine. "made in USA" carries no superior distinction of value to me and does not justify a $800 difference in retail, Unless I were a collector.
If you are not a learned bassist, a standard cut where the basic principles and preferred qualities of a bass are provided by the manufacturer in that standard version, you should have most any desires met in that model.
IMHO, and YMMV, and all that other shit, I would recommend looking at a mexican Fender Jazz or Precision for the kind of cash your talking about. Check Musiciansfriend.com for some average retail pricing. If you know a dealer buddy you can probably beat even those prices. The P body will be a bit closer fitting to you and perhaps lighter and a signature tone. The J body is a snug fit but sized bit larger and more variable tones. The neck on the jazz is kinder to the left hand of a guitar player than the Precision line.
