I have a behringer mx802a and i heard they suck ass. I can't compare to anything else because I've never used anything else. I want a 8-12 channel mixer that is of good quality and worth buying for a small project studio. any recommendations????

use it
learn it.
if you find things about it you like and dont like, remember them. should you decide to upgrade, you'll now have experience and will have used the mixer.

people complain about behringer.......
if it does what you need it to do, then it is fine.

i have a 2442 'cuz i needed more imputs. i have a mackie too. if nothing else, it is a good learning tool

Yeah, just keep using it and spend your money on stuff you need right away. Meanwhile watch for too-sweet deals on new or used items you don't HAVE to have.

I also have a MX802A but not long ago found a nice little Soundcraft Spirit F1. Seems to get a lot of respect around here. Yamaha would also be a step up.

I dont really like the look of Yamaha's mixers. not sure why but I dont. And what is it about mixers that'll make them better than others? Also Behringer seems to have things on lockdown makin' all kinds of audio units, and anyone you talk to seems to own something from them, but why are they frowned upon? Their shit seems alright and affordable. I am happy with my mixer, but like I said I heard they suck, why?

Well, same here. I have a MX802A and would have been quite happy with it until I found a used Spirit F1 and saw the amount of noise the MX802A introduced into the signal chain. Mind you, I could only SEE it on the level meters compared to the much quieter Spirit. I couldn't HEAR it.

I would recommend to anyone starting out: take the shortest path to getting yourself geared up to accomplish what you want. Then swap out the low-end stuff for higher quality as your budget and opportunities allow. I have no ax to grind about Behringer products or the people who use them.
