...
did a wee drum session for some pals a few days ago...

since i'm selling my car, i had my pioneer 10" boxed subs lyrin around...

i decided to solder up a wee pad and use the sub on kick drum, blended with a d112.

sub is central to the reso head and d112 is off towards the edge.

these recordings aren't properly mixed,,but check out the difference :

LOVES IT :)

Yeah I'm liking the sub addition.
Do you always use the d112 as your kick drum mic? For live use it is my least favorite. But in the studio it's pretty much a Shure beta 52a and live the Sennhieser e602.

well, in terms of suitable mics,,,i own

d112
re20
sm7b
re11?!
and a cheap samson.

d112 has always been the goto, but i suspect there might be something wrong with my re20..:confused:
i've never like the d112 as a solo kick mic, where you're relying on it picking up all the balls and all the attack,
but i like it in this mix picking up the tight punch.

sadly, cos i'm a young local student recordist, there isn't always time to mic a session properly (trying different mics and positions etc)

its usually more about getting the job done quickly ( and dieing a little inside)

actually,,maybe you can advise with this re20.....

i used it ages ago for tracking bass and it was great, but i kept getting this mad BUZZ when the bassist played a certain note...
i put it down to a flukey resonance and a lOUD amp,

we were on a time limit, so i turned his amp down a little, and threw up another mic for safety, which worked just fine.

so, with this in mind, i put the re20 on beater during this drum session.

i'd no intention of using it in the mix, but i wanted to test its ability to handle high spl...

result is at
:confused::confused:

not sure what to make of it.

it actually sounds ok in small doses for a bit of click,,,but i get the feeling that when its solod it shouldn't sound sooooo..?...crap?

It doesn't sound that bad.
Could be that something is loose inside....use the search button (in the microphone forum) for I remember a thread about the 20 and something being amiss with the innards, they showed how to take it apart and fix the looseness of the diaphragm holder.
Hope this helps.

cheers for that!

beater micing isn't something i've done a lot of before...

does this track sound 'abnormal' to you?

i've seen that thread before...there is a missing grub screw inside my mic, but at the same time, everything's in there pretty solid.....IDK,lol.

i'm gona put it in the boot of my car and abuse it with a 10" sub to see how it reacts...
at least that way i'll have the time to compare it to other mics.

not the act of doing that,,,,,but the actual recording...

i've answered my own question any way...

i put a 421 and the re20 infront of my car sub and cranked it up.

421 sounded like tight bass....re20 sounded like someone filling their pants.

The 20 should handle that! There must be something wrong with it or maybe putting the pad "on" to compensate for the High SPL.

yeh,it really should handle it...

i'm gona take it apart and make sure it's wired properly...
i remember mention of different impedance outputs at one stage? i'll look into that kind of thing and see what i can turn up.

Cool , be careful with it, the last thing you want is an other door stop.

well,,,tbh i've currently got one! lol..

i have it completely dismantled.. transformer out,,board out, capsule out..

everything looks fine (to my less than pro eyes)

wiring matches what the internet says, and as we all know, the internet can't be wrong!

ok, i'm glad i looked into this!

been playin with the re20...it's distorting like crazy on any high volume sources.

if i tap it gently it's fine, but there is a threshold above which it quite obviously distorts.

i don't get it,,,it sounds great on speech etc, but on anything loud, it just sounds like over driving a cheap speaker....

any thoughts?
