Village Idiot

The Love Butler
I am at my leader's house right now.
He just purchased the Aardvark Direct Pro LX-6.
Looks & sounds like a great unit...

Problem we are having is that during & after laying down a track, we hear a crack & pop noise in the mix.
This is heard while recording sometimes, and always during playback.

It gets worse as we increase the number of tracks, and it really goes over the top once you add direct-x effects to it.

My band leader thinks that whenever we click on various controls (I.E. mouse) during real time playback it initiates that sound.

System we are using is:

Windows 98SE
1.4. gig Athlon
512 DDR Memory
80 Gig Hard Drive

So obviously he is well-hung, computer-wise...

We are using N_Track as the recording software.
N-Track has been freezing up alot, too...
Not allowing us to retrieve files as it should.

Is the problem most likely in the software, either of N-Track or Aardvark, or is it something in the connection of it all?

It is not the cables we are using, that has been checked out.

Any suggestions?

In the aardvark control panal is there a way to increase the buffer? Crank it up all the way.

Does n-track have some sort of buffer control? Check it out.

Does n-track support ASIO, the aardvark does and should be selected as such, somewhere within n-track.

Are you using the latest VIA 4 in 1 drivers? (note: only if it's a VIA chipset, it could be something else - check your motherboard manual)

Get them here:

www.viatech.com

Is DMA enabled in Device Manager?

Right Click My Computer
Properties
Device Manager
Disk Drives

This option may not exist if ATA drivers have been installed - motherboard depending.

the problem *could* be not in the software or card itself, as you mentioned, but rather in the computer that your running everything on...things like cd-rom 'auto notification' can hog up the bus (for a split second) and cause clicks/pops in your recording&playback...

I've posted a link below to some 'computer tuning' tips that might be able to help ya out...

Emeric & Pratt

Thanks alot for your help.

I will forward this info on to my band's leader.
And thanks again for your technical expertise!

Emeric: Who REALLY killed Tim Horton? ;)

Ok Guys...Hey Emeric!

We had a look, and here's what we found out & did:

We cranked the buffers all the way up in the Aardvark Buffer Options as well as the N-Track Buffer Options for Playback/Recording.

The only reference to anything in the motherboard manual regarding having anything onboard the unit made by VIA is:

VIA VT8233 PSIPC
VIA KT266A PAC

We have no idea what that means...

N-Track & Aardvark does support ASIO drivers, and those are the ones we have enabled for use currently.

Given the above VIA info, Do you think we have the VIA 4 in 1 drivers onboard, or do we need to download them?

We cannot find anything referring to DMA enabling in the device manager...And we don't know if the ATA drivers you mentioned are installed.

Let me know what else I can glean from you on this, oh Canadian Buddy!!!!

Hey VI

So, what happened with buffers cranked, same problem I assume?

You can try the VIA 4 in 1 drivers, you have a via chipset, get them from the link above. Only if the buffer thing didn't help.

Oh yeah, speed killed Tim Horton.
