"Smooth" Guitar Sound

Hey,
I'm currently remixing a couple of songs which we recorded at a pro studio but aren't completely happy with the mixes and can't afford to spend any more cash at this point in time. I've done quite a bit of home studio work before so thought I'd give it a go. I was given the unprocessed wav files from him to work wit.

One thing I seem to be having a problem with is the guitar sound. On his mixes, the guitar sounds very "smooth" as opposed to the unprocessed track which sounds a bit harsh.

Just wondering if anyone can offer any advice on how to go about getting that "smooth" sound. I'm mixing in Sonar Producer 6 and have a decent range of plug ins available.

Is it just an eq thing? Have you tried zeroing in on the harshness and cutting it?

starters Notch 2.3KHz

Nice areas to boost...

80Hz - Bottom
400Hz - Note
1.5KHz - Body
3.5KHz - Bite
8KHz - Air

I still want to know what 'smooth means -this time.
I guess that's at least slightly more specific than say 'orange tone'.

Ok, the challenge here is for you to put on you mixer cap and dig in to what differences your're hearing.
 
Cheers for that Sonixx ... I'll give it a go. Hard to explain exactly the sound I'm going for but the tracks at the moment just sound a bit too harsh and raw compared to the other mix. Thanks again.
 
2nd to cutting the harsh frequencies with an EQ...when I used to record with my extremely harsh/bright-sounding amp/guitar, I'd use reverb. Simple as that. Not the one on the amp, that sounded like ass. But the free GlaceVerb plugin and it really made a difference. It was a lead guitar part though. If you're playing rhythm/chords, reverb can muddy it up pretty quickly.
