Small, portable, digital setup. Possible???

I have done a pretty good bit of research on various home recording options... I had about decided what I was going to buy when it dawned on me that I will be leaving for college next year and that I won't be able to take my recording gear with me into the dorms... They are very small. I am curious as to what the bare minumum digital setup would be. Physical size is important because, like I said, the dorms are very small. I am thinking a minidisc based 4track, a drum machine, and a multieffects processor with compression... Anyone have any ideas, suggestions, opinions, etc??? Thanks for the help.

That sounds like a good start, but I know everyone in college has computers these days...you could get all that functionality on a PC too, don't forget...
