My daughter just got a mini mp3 player and I noticed that it can record on a line-in. so the thought was whether it could serve as a really tiny interview recorder. But the lline-in jack does not have plug-in power so I would need some way to get the mic signal up to line level. Normally of course that would be a preamp but a regular preamp using AC power would spoil the whole 'tiny superportable' goal.

Any suggestions?

...but if you don't have the skills to build your own, you have to check out this stuff...a buddy of mine uses it (stereo mic and battery pre) to record live concert stuff on mini-disc and it is surprisingly good!...very inexpensive and high quality!!!...
