I recently bought a Shure SM7B. I'm plugging it into a Fireface 800 interface. The output of this thing is very low. An SM58 is considerable hotter. The guy at store says thats how it is. I'm just wondering is that really how it is?

Thanks

I think that it is a few db quieter due to the fact that the element is 2" behind the front so it cannot end up being right on the mouth.

yup - that is just how it is -- SM58s are indeed hotter. You should be able to boost in the software, no? If so, then low output is not a bad thing, since we should generally be tracking a low levels. If not, then you might need a preamp with more gain? But I bet you can do it with software. It's likely that you'll grow to appreciate the mic a lot.
