SM7...more uses than just vocals?

Well as a drummer....

The SM 57 has been the #1 used mic for snare and the skin side of hand drums. It is probably the most versatile mic that is good for many applications. I don't know if it is "the best" for any application, but if you can only bring one type of mic with you, that would be the one to choose.
Interestingly, I seldom use mine (I've had it for many many years). It is really good for the snare, but for the past few years I have been using the Sennheisser e604 instead because it is smaller and stays out of the way and gives me a very similar (but slightly hotter) signal as the SM 57. I am also using the e604 on the skin side of doumbeks and djembes because they can clip on and are lighter.
I would never get rid of my SM 57 because it's like a security blanket, and I know that if all else fails, I can go to the trusty 57.

I love how half the people responding don't even know what an SM7 is. :D

Oops!

I swear that I read that as an SM 57 (ingrained I guess). SM 7, oh yeah that broadcast mic that is just so damn good on vocals. Nope. I don't own one but I've been in sessions where it was used and once Richard Monroe used his set back away to record some snare (rudiment type) work that I was doing.
Sorry guys, it's just that here on Home Recoding we are usually talking about less expensive mics and the SM 57 is a favorite topic. A SM 7 runs almost $500 or more doesn't it?
yeah we were being stupid. :P

Nah, a new one is about $320. Relatively cheap for as good a mic as it is.

Yep, mine was $330--and except for the half-baked kick attempt (again, maybe my fault!) I've only used it for vocals. And even at that, it's some of the very best gear $$ I've spent...

a very robust dildo. Just ask Marilyn Manson or Extreme Elvis.

correction...an sm58 is better as a dildo...as the 57 could get lost in your orifice, but the ball at the end of the 58 acts as a plug to ensure it doesn't get sucked right up your ass/cooter.

hahaha eh, it's alright. SM 57 and SM 7 are different ball games man...same sport, different teams.

I concur 110%! :D
so you really like it, eh?

and I called the guy about the one on Craig's list, and he said someone snatched it up =( I didn't know they were a hot item around here! ha. Ah, I'll have to try my luck on eBay.

I take it you are speaking from personal experience? ;-P

Fyi, your firepod preamps probably aren't going to cut it. I had a firebox with an sm7 and I had to crank the pre's and use the 10db of digital gain to get a good level. Very noisy. I've heard that the m-audio dmp3 is a good budget pre that will work well with an sm7, but I have yet to pick something up so my sm7 has been sitting for a while.

Ah, thanks for that. Yeah, I'm gonna buy a nice pre for it that'll give it the kick in the pants that it needs. Between an e609 and this....I'm gonna have a ton of gain! ha

Hey, I have no idea why it posted three times! Oh well, jazzes it up a bit, I guess! :D
