I recently picked up a Shure SM 7 from a frend of mind that had the conector pulled out of the mic. I re soldered the connector and now i get a high hiss when i use the mic ....(almost like old tape 4 track hiss). could it be that I soldered it wrong or is it just shot? And can i buy a replacement connector from shure?

Thank You

Just guesses on my part, since I'm not familiar with the mic. It's a dynamic mic, so has no active electronics, so that wouldn't be the problem. I'd guess you might have wired the connector wrong, so you are only getting half the balanced signal, which could both introduce extraneous noise into the signal through the cable, and necessitate turning up the gain which would increase your preamp noise.

Make sure pin 1 is to the ground/shield, and pins 2 and 3 carry the signal.

Edit: then again, maybe the hiss has something to do with the reason the mic was taken apart in the first place. Bad transformer? (I am assuming it has a trasformer in it to match the impedance and balance the signal.) Ask your friend why it was taken apart.
