i have a chance to get a 2nd hand sm58 for about half the price they go for new where i live... i'm kinda new to recording and don't have much cash so its seems like a good idea.

i want to mic a guitar cab and do vocals too. would an sm58 be a good start till i can learn more about recording and get some cash together for better gear?

On some singers a SM58 (or SM57) meets or beats expensive microphones so it's a good idea to always try them out.

i prefer the 58 for live playing... but there is no reason why you can't use it to record. however if you use even a cheap concenser mic (such as the behringer b1) you will notice a big and positive difference

With all due respect, once you have a good enough mic pre (DMP3 or VTB-1 on up IMHO), the Shure will take EQing better than many budget condensers on a variety of voice types. This also assumes you have a decent equalizer like an Aphex 109 (or better). That "detail" in the Behringer can come out as being harsh.

Some world class engineers, like Tony Visconti, use SM58's on major label releases...
