Hey, this is a pretty basic question, but I'm wanting to record vocals and I have access to a sm58 mic, but i'm wondering if it can be plugged into a 1/8" input on my soundcard.. I believe the mic is xlr (i may not know what i'm talkin about here..heh) and i'm wondering if there's an adapter i can get for it. Also, I believe I need some sort of preamp for the mic, right? well, any chance I could use a sansamp gt-2 as the preamp??? actually, i guess I'd need a 1/4 inch adapter.. so basically, I just want to know if I could run this mic through my sansamp and into my soundcard before I actually borrow the mic and find out I don't know what I was thinking.. heh.. thanks!

The sansamp won't really work, but you can use your soundcard's preamp. Just plug your SM58 into the mic input. It'll work...it just won't work well. You really should spend the $60 or so on an ART Tube MP or $80 for an M-Audio Audio Buddy.

As far as the adapter, you might be able to get an XLR -> 1/8" adapter, but you'll probably have to settle for an XLR -> 1/4" and 1/4"->1/8". Just check Radioshack.

really depends on how good a vocal you wanna record:

just a step above suck
----------------------------
you could get a cord that goes from XLR to 1/4" and then get a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter....XLR into the mic - 1/8" adapter onto the 1/4" - 1/8" into the mic in of the soundcard....you EALLY have to be careful with metering here, easy to clip, but it can work

i have a clip posted in this thread..it isnt great quality and it worked..it was a sm57 (basically the same mic as a sm58)

passable quality
--------------------
then you could use the SansAmp GT-2...it is a preamp, even if it is designed for guitar....i ran a sm57 thru a J-Station Processor for a while before i got a real preamp.....run the mic with the XLR to 1/4" cable into the the gt2...then go out ht egt2 with a 1/4' to 1/8" cable into the line in of the card......

good quality
---------------
get a decent preamp like the Audio Buddy $79

Jesus, Gidge, isn't that what I just told the guy?

I guess me saying it isn't good enough, huh?

Mr. 5000 posts has to rack up another one...

And, BTW, I don't think the Sansamp will work better than the soundcard, but try it out anyway once you get the XLR->1/4" cable. It's not capable of being as clean and quiet as the J-Station, in my experience, so I don't see it being any better than the sound card's mic input either.

No i didnt say the same think as you Mr. 647 posts.....i think the Sansamp will work better than straight into the soundcard......so, whatever!

Well, you just could have said that you think the Sansamp will work better, rather that reguritating exactly what I said as if it doesn't mean anything for me to say it.

Otherwise, what's the point of posting this:

I guess my advice on the adapter and the mic pre's was simply useless bullshit from a non-credible source. Let's just wait for Gidge to step in and clear things up.

*sigh*

:(

Maybe someday I'll approach Gidge's vaunted level of supremacy.

you seem to have some underlying issues you need to deal with.....does my larger post count and penis size intimidate you?.....

and please call me "MR. 5100 POSTS", thank you......

really, lighten up......

Whatever...I just think its a bit annoying to have someone post exactly the same thing as someone else, in the same thread no less...and seem to think that they're adding something to the discussion or coming up with some original thought. Makes a person feel a bit useless when they're trying to help out, which is something I like to do...

Any disagreements?

Dolemite, in hindsight, maybe i just shoulda kept me comments to my opinion on the SansAmp...but hey, i also added which order i thought they would work best in...an added an adorable soundclip of my daughter(when she was 4, shes 5 now).....if i knew you would get offended, i would have not posted here at all.....im just here to help and learn also....

you know, this BBS is a great thing but hte bad part is that you leave a post, know what you meant by it, and 10 different people can read it and get 10 different interpretations.....there are very few people i have purposely tried to piss off(you are not one, Alan Hyatt is not one, Ed is not one,etc et.).....

peace brutha

I agree with some of the points but disagree with a few of the others. The only thing I can confirm as fact is the number of Gidge's posts.

The mic into either will sound pretty crappy. Dynamic mics need a lot of preamp gain to get a clean signal. If your recording loud rock stuff you might be okay but dont expect soft vocals or acoustic guitar to sound very good.

Really? I know I've tried to get Alan all riled up and it seems to me you've done some of that. ;)

Anyway, I know this was nothing intentional, but still I'm left thinking that there's more to it than my interpretation...or you trying to help out. The bottom line is that I think there was a pretty clear answer to jsv08's question and it didn't especially matter who stepped up to answer it. Apart from the difference of opinion on the Sansamp, we posted basically the same thing, which leads me to believe that you think it does matter who responded to him and that your post, coming from you, is automatically superior.

That's how it came off to me...maybe I'm reading too far into it, but at the very least I think it was inconsiderate not to acknowledge that I had already posted basically the same thing. Again, I don't think it was anything intentional, but I tend believe people do things like this unconsciously but with purpose, if that makes any sense.

why would someone think a post coming from me "is automatically superior"? because of post count?....i think most here know that post count means nothing...i mean Harvey Gerst and Sjoko2 were considered Gods as newbies , and rightfully so.....

i would bet you know as much, and probably more, about all this than me...i just had a different opinion and im long-winded.......

*post count means nothing

*95% of the things ive learned about recording ive learned from Homerecording.com and i pass on what ive learned as much as possible

*im just a newbie. a guy with a modest little setup in his spare bedroom with cheapskate (yet somewhat quality) equipment writing songs and making simple little demos

*im not here to piss people off(99.99%of the time)...if it happens, its unintentional.......

I think you missed my point, so I'll try to clarify without making this any uglier. ;)

It only seemed to me that you thought so, as I explained:

Anyway, that's as far as I'm going to go with this. I know in the grand scheme of things internet forum politics (or whatever you want to call it) is incredibly unimportant but I can't say this didn't bother me. To be honest, I spend WAY too much time on this BBS (that downtime yesterday really made me realize it) which makes me conclude that I must be getting too involved in things like this. I think in addition to GAS (Gear Aquisition Syndrome) I also suffer from OCGDS (Obssessive-Compulsive Gear Discussion Syndrome). It appears that I would much rather either shop for gear or talk about it than actually put it to use. From now on, I'm hoping to change that (and ween myself from my internet addiction in general ;) ).

I'm also the kind of person who doesn't hold back when something bothers me, but also quick to forgive people.

So no hard feelings, Gidge! :p

ill end it here myself....id even buy you a beer.....BUD or BUD LT:eek:

Phew!! I was afraid to thank either of you! heh j/k .. but hey, thanks, I appreciate it!
