SM58 into Audio Buddy...Do I plug it into XLR or 1/4 jack?

I've got an M-Audio, Audio Buddy, and I want to boost so a couple dynamic mics while recording drums (2 SM58s) should I plug them into the Phantom Power, or just into the 1/4 in line in jacks?

Does it make a difference?

You want to plug them into the XLR inputs using proper mic cables. Dynamic mics do not use phantom power - in fact they ignore it. But keep the phantom power turned off anyway.

Yes, it makes a difference. Using a 1/4" adapter on a mic that is designed for XLR's does not give you the full potential of the mic.

why is that...what is lacking if i plug it straight in to the 1/4?

Most newbies a trying to use a mic like a 57 with some kind of recorder that has unbalanced inputs, so they'll get a xlr-female to 1/4" male mono adapter. You end up having to crank the gain more that way, and you end up with more noise.

I think you have all but answered your own question. In general you'll want to plug a microphone into a microphone input, and a higher-level source into a line input.

OTOH, if the mic is putting out a really hot level (as they sometimes do with drums), there's nothing at all wrong with plugging it into a line input to lower the gain and avoid overloading the preamp, as long as you understand what you're doing. Of course, this will only work with mics (like your 58's) that don't require phantom power.
