SM57 vs MXL 900 (guitar amp)

Greetings everyone...this is my first post. This site seems to have a lot of valuable information. Sure hope I can contribute at some point.

Anyway...I've been recording my guitar amp with an MXL 900 condenser mic and the sound is somewhat harsh. I'm not sure if I'm using too much distortion or if it's the mic. I really don't turn up the amp that loud when recording so its probably not distorting at the mic.

One thing I was thinking was to try an SM57 since that seems to be the standard. But dishing out $90 for a 'maybe' won't cut it with me.

Any thoughts?

If you pay $90, you're paying too much. Look around, I got mine for $60 new from GC. It was a price match, but I can't remember where I got it from. And for what it's worth, I use the 57 and an SP B1 on my amp, then blend the two. It sounds pretty good (record mainly distorted). good luck!
