SM57 vs 58

Hey everyone. I'm on a tight budget and i wanted to purchase one of these. I want to record vocals with it but I also need to mic amps for recording as well. I was wondering if the 57 is comparable to the 58 as far as studio vocals are concerned? I know the 58 is superb for vocals but I can only buy one. Which would be better for what I need? Thanks in advance.

You can't go wrong either way. Same capsule in both but the pop filter on the 58 does change the response ever so slightly.

I always felt my vocal recordings on the 57's came out a little flat sounding...I don't own any 58's so I have nothing captured to contrast the two, but I love them for live performance.

They're the same mic ... run a search on the BBS and you will find a million and one threads on this very subject.

I say get the 58 and if you want to put it on a guitar amp...just unscrew the wind screen.

I wouldn't even take the screen off. Personally, I like the 57 better.
