Then go get some decent monitors, you need to be able to hear stuff like that.

Because you can just whip out a couple hundred bucks for monitors just like that..

Pretty Much. But the freq response is tiny bit different.
Only with the grill on the 58. If you take the grill off, it's the same mic. The frequency response difference is due to proximity effect. (you can't get as close to the diaphragm of the 58)

But doesn't the sm58 sound different without the grille? All it has is that foam unlike the sm57 which has a flat grille to filter and yet be really close to the source.

I hear a difference between the 58 and the 57 but I don't like either of them anyway so it doesn't matter too much to me.
I much prefer EV mics but I primarily use dynamics for live work which is really pretty different than what you need for recording.

No, at least a grand, couple hundred won't get you much. Seriously though, if you're going to spend the money spend it on monitoring, it's amazing the difference good monitors make.

It's the same capsule, of course it sounds the same.

I usually use my sole SM58 as a 57 -- I just take the grill off.

I need a good mic to record guitars and drums and decided to go for the sm57. but before i buy, i was wondering whether it would be better to go for an sm58. am i mistaken in thinking that both mics have the same frequency response and cardioid pattern and the only difference is the grill shape? therefore, if you remove the grill from an sm58 then it becomes an sm57? can anyone clear this up for me,

thanks

simon

In the 6 1/2 yrs I've been here, I believe this is the 7,586th time a person has asked this same question.

That's gotta' be a new record or sumthin'! :o
