I am a personal fan of the SM57 and have used it NUMEROUS times in the studio. I haven't really got to play around with the e609 yet though. I was just wondering what everyones opinion on these two mics and who prefers what.:)

I have both.

I haven't really used the 57 on a guitar much, but the e609 works GREAT! My guitarist loves it, actually, saying he much prefers it to the 57 he has at home.

Another 57 Vs. 609 thread????

ok...well I have both as well...I think 609 sucks on guitar cabs...thats just my opinion...kinda weird since that is what it was made for...however, I think it is the best snare mic that I have ever used...

If I had to choose between the 2....Id take the 57 every day of the week and twice on Sundays....

Thanks man, sorry about another thread, i wasnt aware :)

I've got both as well. I definitely prefer the 57 on cabs, though the e609 sees some use there.

But I too have found new life for the e609 on a snare. I've got it on the bottom of the snare (with an Audix i5 on top) and I mix 'em about even--killer snare sound.

Thats really interesting.. ive never used anything on snares except 57's and now alot of ppl i talk to are using different dynamic mics for both top AND bottom..

I don't understand all the hatin' on the SM57. I think it sounds great; the very good guitar player in my band thinks it's great.

I have not used the e609, so I can't give a comparison, but I can give this link:

http://mixonline.com/classic-tracks/

I have read so many negative comments about the SM57, I decided to do some research. I went through those sessions and lost track of the number of times I saw the SM57 listed as either the only mic on a guitar cabinet or one of 2 mics on a guitar cabinet. It is also listed as being used on snare, kick drum (David Crosby's Laughing) and bass amp. It gets used on vocal too.

I think the e609 is a newer design and it may well sound better; I really don't know. But I do know I have heard enough of the sessions listed on that site that used SM57s on guitar amp. If it was good enough for a pro engineer in early '70s or later, it is good enough for me now........ My choice of one dynamic mic over another on a guitar amp is not what separates my level of talent from those guys.

anyone can talk as much shit about a 57 as they want....show me a studio that dont have at least one....Im not trying to say its the greatest thing since sliced bread or anything...but its a tried and true workhorse that can be used almost anywhere from recording accoustic guitar to hanging drywall....

I don't have things against either. But in most cases I've been in.. the 57 is a bit dull on the amps i stick it in front of.

57 vs 609 on snare? depends. i've used both. The 57 sees the top more and I often have used a 609 on the bottom if I don't have a 414 around (not exactly nearly the same mic but some reason I go to it next)

but its [SM57] a tried and true workhorse that can be used almost anywhere from recording accoustic guitar to hanging drywall....

Drywall? I like it! lol i hear ya.. 57s are prbly the most durable mics ever. My friend was playing around on his porch that is up almost 10 ft. and accidentally dropped one off of it and it sounded better afterwards in my opinion. Now thats a mic lol.:D

There are better dynamic mics than the SM57 but it works on so many different sources and that's why I have 4 of them!

If I have plenty of time I will try out a MD421, Beyer 201, EV RE20 etc but if I need a useable sound in about 10 seconds the SM57 is always there.

in what way?

Well, the Sm57 is an old mic, and in the meantime, a lot of other mics have been made, and aren't that bad, especially for the price (Like the EV Co4). But a Sm57 sounds just like an Sm57. I prefer hearing what the sound of the source is instead of the sm57-sound. I also like the sound of a e606 more than a sm57 on a guitar cab for instance.

Cool man! I actually live very close to Clemson.. I work there (Mr. Knickerbockers) It's cool to see someone on here :)

 sorry for the late reply. I just realized. the board doesn't seem to be reliable with notifications.

few mics have stood the test of time or been on as many recordings as the 57. IMO, that's definitely not a recipe for being overrated.

It all depends on the player and amp. But lately I've been preferring the e609.

After hearing a side by side analysis, I prefer the e609 over the 57, much brighter, crisper, and more definition for lead guitar work; greater cutting power through the mix with little EQ. The i5 was a tad brighter than the 57 but not much difference.

I'd like to follow the time-honoured HomeRec practice of voting for something I've never owned or tried.

I have a 57 but not a 609, so the 609 must be better... besides, it was losing and I felt sorry for it...
