sm57 clones

ok i've seen a few different mics that look exactly like the 57. my question is do these clones work as good if not better than the 57? i know looks dont make up the sound of the mic but i just thought if someone was going to make an exact copy of it they would make it sound roughly the same
 
Nope. Just because a company makes a mic look like something popular doesn't at all mean it sounds like the same popular mic or that the company was even trying for that. In fact, chances are, if they were indeed trying to make a mic sound like a popular mic, it probably wouldn't be the popular mic that it looks like on the outside.

As for how any of the "57 clones" sound, I haven't a clue.
 
I've seen this question pop up a few times on this board, and it makes no sense to me. 57s are so cheap you just buy the 57, dammit, not the clone! You can get them used for $60 and under.

Next there's going to be someone asking, "Is there a cheap clone of the ECM8000 somewhere, and does it sound as good?"
 
As soon as I posted my response, the first thing I thought of was those tape op mics. They use the same capsule as the ECM8000, don't they?
 
I don't think they're the same, but I think the Ecm8000 also uses panasonic capsules...

but on to 57 clones.. I have some cheapo akg d60s mics that I sometimes pretend are 57/58's. I screw off the popper thingie and I think I'm hot stuff. But I've never used 57/58s so it's just an ego thang.

Actually, AKG D690 sounds very much like an SM58, and with the wind screen removed, a lot like a 57, and they're not clones of anything, just good cheap dynamic mics. They're discontinued now, replaced, I think by d770s, but you can still pick them up at GC. They sold me my last one for $36, and they are frankly excellent dynamics, quite often used in preference to my SM7B. And you can sing into them, something I wouldn't personally do with a 57, although others have, sometimes with very good results.-Richie
