Hello,

I'm looking for a dynamic mic to add to my collection that will primarily be used for live and studio vocals and occasional micing of guitar or keyboard amps. What I have right now is a Shure SM57 and an Audio Technica AT4047. I've been researching and it seems like the SM7B and the PL20/RE20 fit the bill. Unfortunately I don't have the ability to test both mics in person, but have read that the SM7 is "thicker" while the RE20 is "lighter/airier."

I'm using a cheap Omni Studio box as a preamp, which I believe contains DMP2 preamps. My voice can probably be best described as slightly low, slightly thick, slightly congested-sounding, sort of in between Lou Reed and Ira Kaplan(?)- the lead singer of Yo La Tengo.

Suggestions welcome.

If I'm right the SM7 is a condenser....not a dynamic...

For live vocals, I'd go with the Sennheiser E835, or the E845. Some will recommend the Shure SM58 or Shure Beta 58, which are fine mics as well, I just think the Sennheisers are a tad better, and they are a little cheaper, too.

Guitar amps could be done with your SM57 just fine, my first choice would be the Sennheiser MD421 or the Sennheiser E609 Silver (or E606 if you're in Europe).

Good luck,
Stan.

Never tried the SM7B but the EV RE20 I've used on everything from vocals, acoustic guitar, bass amps, kick drums...even a tuba to good effect. It's a full bodied mic with great lows, a really rich mid range and surprisingly airy on top. Also, if you move around when you sing it doesn't have a lot of proximity effect so things stay pretty constant. A great all rounder that every studio should have in the locker.

I hope this helps but if you can go and test one for yourself

SM7 fan myself. And indeed it is a dynamic. I think it is quite possible the most versitile mic I own. I sounds reasonably good on most things and amazing on everything else. It is my go to vocal and snare mic most times. IT is just an mic that is easy to get a usable sound out of and takes EQ very well. Though, I don't think you can go wrong with either the RE20 or SM7. I wish I had both really. ;)

ditto on the MD421 - it's good for a lot of stuff: Mic cabs, toms, voice sometimes, and I've used it on a cello along with an SDC for a great sound.

Actually, it's a medium-diaphragm dynamic.

Size is very relative......................It is not the size, but how you use it.

Obviously so with mics in every measurable way.
