SM48 & 57 vocal issues

How should I be miking vocals with an SM48 or 57 for home recording into a 4-track?

I know these are good live mics, but everything has been way blown out or distorted so far.

How do I get good recording levels?

I'm not familliar with the 48 but with the 57 you definately need a pop screen. The 57 sounds best if you get right up on it but that's why you will need the pop screen.
