I wish I knew where to pick up 57's for $50 new all day but I paid $75 each for mine from Mars. On the kick I've heard varying stories about the best mic but the Beta 52 and AKG D112 seem to be mentioned often.
For placement I've found that the 57's need to be pretty close to the source to get a decent sound. For placement of the 57's I sort of split the kit into 3rd's and placed the mics there, one in the middle and one on either side of my 2 rack toms -- although I only have 2 57's.
For the kick mic, mine is directly in front of the hole I cut in my front head. I've also heard of folks placing the kick mic just inside the kick, all the way inside the kick and 3' or so away from the kick. I guess it all comes down to your taste and environmental conditions. Just experiment and try some different setups.
