SM 57/58 vs. Beta 57/58

Are the Shure Beta series mics better than the SM series? We all know how awesome the SM 57 is, but how good is the Beta 57? And if it is better, is it worth the extra money? Same question goes for the 58's--Beta vs. SM.

Thanks,
Bill

The Beta 57a is the improved version of the original Beta 57.
It sounds "different"-not necessarily better than an SM57.
It's brighter with a quicker transient response due to a different element
than the SM57, and it takes less mic pre gain as it's "hotter".
Try both on your intended application and see which you like.
You may end up with both as they're good mikes!

The SM58 has a Cardioid pattern and the Beta 58 has a Supercardioid pattern, the Supercardioid pattern offers greater feedback rejection by having a lower sensitivity to off-axis sources.
