slowing down?

Hi!

I'm using the AI4.

I have the impression that recorded melodies change pace from time to time.
Sometimes a song feels to be going in the right "speed" and when I listen to it half an hour later in seem to go very slow.

I use both HalionOne instruments, electric guitar and song.

Could this be a question of perception or could it be that the program alter the speed?

Cubase will not slow down the speed of a track unless you tell it to. Any digital media plays EXACTLY the same speed every time, down to the microsecond. It's not like a tape deck motor is getting weak, or a turntable drive mechanism is going bad and wavering the speed.. There's no physical mechanical components in the digital world. In digital, you get clicks and pops instead.

Thank you for the answer.
I know more or less how the digital "mechanisms" function, but since my perception or experience of the speed, in one particular song, differ so much from one time to another I had to ask if someone have had the same experience.
If it is a pure perceptional phenomenon it is psychological very interesting.

Sometimes a song speed DOES change ever so slightly, when you play it live or whatever, you kinda flow with it and dont even realize it's happening. So in a studio if you're forced to play it against a constant tempo click, those parts where you'd slow down a little seem too fast, or vice versa. You can set up a tempo map in any daw to change the tempos any time, as many times as you want.

Sometimes Cubase change the speed of the song? yes, but, in my case, only when i import a track with a different setup...

Example:

My project is set to 44.100 hz and 16 bits.
If i import a track with different properties like 48.000 hz and 24 bits into that project, sometimes Cubase will change the speed of the song, i don't know why, but it does.

To avoid this, use always the same project setup.

I think in your case, is a perception issue. But you can easily check it with a chronometer, press play at the same time and let it run for the whole song a couple of times. At the end, is always the same time?

Cheers

Yeah that's true, but I thought the OP was talking about subtle minor changes to track tempos, not obvious 10% or more increases in speed.. If I import a 48k track as 44.1k and it's way fast there's no question something's messed up. In that case you wouldn't feel it's right at any time, and sped up slightly later. You'd know the second you heard it it's WAY too fast.

Thank you for the answers.

I think it is a question of perception, but never the less it is strange.
