I'm finding that the more I record the slower the playback becomes. I just started running my external hard drive through a firewire 800 port and my pre/interface is USB. But, the song I'm working on is only 3 minutes long. It does have alot of regions per track, which is my guess as to why it's slowing down; but it says to increase the buffer size all the time.

this is a latency issue, right?

any suggestions? I have done most of the protools instructions from their website.

Is your hard drive USB 1.0, or 2.0?

How much RAM do you have?

More tracks, effects, data per song will ultimately slow down the system.

The only thing I can suggest off the top is disabling any programs/devices
in your Admin Tools start-up to free up some resources. Maybe a defrag
as well.

defrag my external hard drive?

i also have a copy of the same song on my internal hard drive does that cause probs?

I'm pretty sure my hard drive is 2.0 but I'm using the firewire now for that.

I have 6 USB ports. should i disable all but the one I need for my audio interface?

I have 2GB of RAM

Are you running a lor of VSTs that are very CPU heavy. This could cause what you are talking about as the CPU has to do all the Math involved before the music can play and it as it is constantly recalculating the music may be stopping and starting to allow the CPU to catch up with the calculations

could also be the case if you are using a ton of softsynths or samples that are using up all of the available RAM

what are VSTs and softsynths?

Plugins
Reverbs, Delays, amp simulators, string samples etc

yeah I have a guitar amp simulator I've been using alot. I've been putting it on each individual guitar track; do you think I could do better by putting it on an aux and running each guitar track to it?

I've been using the time compressor too quite a bit I've noticed does that screw it up?
