Are these any good? Do they usually just slide closer and farther away from the player or do they ever have a fuller range of movement (e.g. side to side)?
The sliding mounts that I have seen only slide front to back. I don't find them any different, the only thing that they don't do is put a big hole in your bass drum but they limits you on the hight of your toms sometimes. In a nutshell there is no difference either way there will be toms mounted on your bass drum.
