Skips in monitor mix?

While usingthe setup in my signature this weekend, I noticed that there where playback "skips" in the monitor mix. The incoming signal wasn;t interrupted, but it was hard to keep the artist on rythm.

I was recording onto a laptop with a 40GB HD. Would recording onto an external harddrive eliminate the skips?

Don't know if this will help, but I've just spent weeks trying to get the playback skips out of my Presonus Inspire. Presonus tech support finally confirmed that the issue is an unresolvable IRQ conflict with my laptop's ATI Radeon 9000 video card and.....all Presonus firewire products have the exact same problem with the Radeon 9000 where IRQ 16 is shared.

Just don't want you to spend hours tearing your hair like I did if this is your configuration. Anyone want to buy an LNIB Inspire??
