This is part of an email I sent to our employees today. This is probably old news to most of you, but just in case you might want to check out the details in the link (I try to never confuse our employees with details). This is one bitchy virus!

You Mac people are, as usual, immune :) - RW.

>>> All users should be aware of a new and dangerous computer virus called the Sircam or W32.SIRCAM Worm.

This virus, like many computer viruses, is typically caught through incoming email. Once the virus infects a computer it attempts to email copies of itself to all addresses in the infected computer's mailbox.

What makes this virus particularly hard to protect against is that the email it sends out, plus the name of the email attachment that carries the actual virus, are randomly named. ANY UNEXPECTED EMAIL CONTAINING AN ATTACHMENT WITH A SIMILAR NAME TO THE EMAIL SUBJECT SHOULD NOT BE OPENED.

At this time the Norton anti virus program can detect the virus but CANNOT kill it. The only way to remove the virus is to download a special program from Symantec. They and other Anti-Virus vendors are working to update their software.

For more info on the virus please check the following link:

i was infected through a MDW, musicians discount warehouse. a file called "friday may 4" was attached. i was able to stop this virus with a program i downloaded from "protector plus". a shareware version. it found the "sircam.worm" virus and wiped it out.
