Singing in pitch

I think there is a big difference between the odd off note that is so rare that you can barely hear it and doing away with the idea of hitting pitch not mattering. For me, there's no character at all in not hitting notes

I'm not advocating not worrying about pitch.

I'm just saying I've never heard a good concert where every note from every performer on every song on every instruemnt was perfect. however virtually every mainstream record you hear is made through comping or correcting to be that way.
I've never left a concert (from a real quality act) complaining about the fourth note in the second chorus vocal being 15-20 cents off pitch.
I have been to concerts where a bands recorded sound is perfectly on pitch and live they can't hit a single note and in this case I have complained (a lot, to anyone who'll listen). In this case their records are really not a slightly polished version of their perormance but an outright lie of something they actually cannot accomplish in the real world.

This is a good situation to admirer their audio engineer and producer.

4 octaves? Man, I don't think I can even cover 1!

I didn't think you were. But I know so many people that have an offhand view of it, you know, "Oh it doesn't really matter....". Yes it does ! :)

I'm with you there. I guess I'm just of that generation that prized singing on pitch. Actually, I don't prize it, I always have taken it for granted. And I think most people can hold a tune, it's a matter of degree and whether one needs to. All my school days, there were school assemblies where we'd sing so it was just the norm to hear a huge cross section of people singing and for the most part, in tune, even though we generally thought the hymns were lyrically daft or confusing. But Dintymoore makes a great point with his analogy; when it becomes automatic, you don't lose it, but from time to time you need to keep it fresh.
According to Tom Jones, it gets harder as one gets older....
