Sing Autumn Leaves is an old song that I always knew suffered from a poor arrangement.

I am rounding on a old few songs as I finally get a sense of an albums worth of material I'd like to produce. I seem to be going through quiet a good patch at the moment and this came quite quickly.

Big thanks to Dave for his piece a couple of weeks ago that reminded me I had a Mandolin and knew I had to use it. My only review was for my Mandolin playing - not that I think it compares to Dave's work.

All comments appreciated.

Now I can hear those textures!

There is a super sonic landscape underpinning this track. Lots of deliciously interesting things to listen to. The straight waltz feel is uncommon these days, and is refreshing to listen to . . . though just having done a 5/4 song, my brain was wanting to lose every sixth beat in this and convert it to 5/4 as well.

Interesting juxtaposition of images: Kennedies, motorcades, Che Geuverra sitting alongside autumn leaves.

There was something curious happening at the bottom end. I couldn't quite figure it out. Maybe you've got a tremolo effect happening on the bass, or something like that? Or maybe another instrument is doubling the bass line. It's a bit disconcerting, and sounds like something drifting off pitch.

Nice sparkly mandolin there. Good use of backing vocals.

This song has been worked up in Logic? It sounds good.

Maybe you could increase the drama of the textures by emptying things out a bit here and there, so that we get moments of great emptiness as well as that wonderful palette of sounds.

Very well done - the song's arrangement is really evocative. The tune's overall feel reminds me a lot of Eagles' "Saturday Night" from the Desperado album.

Sparkly!

Hey Burt - The mandolin adds just the right emphasis in the higher spectrum. It is tuned high enough that it doesn't interfere with your vox and adds a nice texture. Question: Did you trigger the kick with the bass downbeats? They are lined up super tight. I know I would be hard pressed to play them that closely. (Of course I'm full on old school here. Play/record everything and only use the box once I have done the final mix to stereo from the console.:o) As per the bothersome bass mentioned by gecko it sounds as though there is one string out of tune and when you switch to that string it grates on the ear a bit. Of course that's probably not what is going on but that's what it sounds like. Also, the tambourine is starting to be a thing for you. I like it. It could be a signature type of sound for you.

I remember this tune from before and the difference is remarkable. Nice effort. An album you say?

The intro piano figure is really autumnal.
Mando really lift this track.
Really cool vocal performances.
There is a little bass confusion.
A REALLY professional arrangement.
Welld one.

cool! :)

I enjoyed this one, Burt. It has a very original feel to it and it keeps my interest through to the end.

Keep us posted on the progress of your album.

Cheers,
Joseph :)
