words and lyrics are not songs.

Music is songs.

Sometimes I think people get the two mixed up. Just because you write lyrics, doesn't make you a songwriter, no?

Maybe I'm wrong though.

You are correct, at least to a point. Some people like instrumentals. That's cool. I love em. But words...lyrics..can be a vital part of the MUSIC. Just words, that might be poetry. A good song, is a good song. Doesn't matter what it contains, if it entertains the listener. I always write from teh standpoint of a guitar. That is my choice. Someone else might have a different point to get across. There is no wrong in doing it that way.

You're right, man, I agree. I have a friend who claims to write songs...so I say, "Oh cool man, let's hear it"

My friend takes out a sheet of paper where he's written some lyrics...reads them...looks up waiting for a reaction.

I tell him that's not a song, those are poems. Songs are actually sung. He doesn't seem to understand. That was my point.

You've got a good point. The flip side of the coin's common too. A chord progression isn't a song either. I'd like a nickel for every time someone's said "listen to my new song!" and it's a I-IV-V all over again.

Here's what webster has to say ... FWIW.

song: a short musical composition of words and music.

songwriter: a person who composes words or music or both esp. for popular songs.
