I've tried searching around for a simple talkback box and can't find one. Something with a built in preamp and a push button. I don't need anything real fancy. Actually, I guess ANYTHING with a built in pre, mic input, and some outs will work. :D

So.....a mic preamp? j/k

You could try using a cheap preamp, and then build a little box with a switch in it that would interrupt the output of the preamp unless its pushed down. (I can't remember what that type of switch is called. I want to say momentary something-or-other.) That would be very easy to build.

Or you could always go the route of the Presonus Central Station or the Mackie Big Knob, and get a bunch of monitoring options all in one package.

I haven't really heard of anything like what you're looking for except for the PreSonus and Mackie stuff, but those aren't dedicated talkback boxes. I'd be interested to find out if anyone knows of such a thing, too.

I've researched the Big Knob. Word is that it colors the sound too much going to your monitors. I'd like to have the Central Station but it's a little out of my price range right now. I suppose I could just wait and get the Central Station when I can afford it. :(

I just use a free channel from my mixer for my talk back section, would rather have a button but the fader does just fine!

Yup, cheapo mixer like the 2 mic pre Behri unit would work for this. The mute switch serves as your talkback button. It's a latching button, but some people prefer it like that anyway.
