OK I have 2 satelite bose speakers and a sub woofer which is passive,(these are rated at 100w rms...) and i'm running it through a 120w amp. So the woofer is plugged into the speaker outputs of the amp, and the speakers plug into the woofer, but u probably already knew that... :P I'm just wondering if its a problem (or bad for the speakers) to plug the speakers straight into the amp and use a different sub woofer that can plug into the amp ??
Thanks

This will most likely burn up your satellites. The sub has a hi-pass filter built into it that limits the amount of low frequency energy going into the satellites. If you hook them straight up to the amp, you'll put too much power into the satellites. And it's a good bet that those Bose speakers can't take much.

Thanks mate.
Can i ask you how to get the best out of this speaker system then? Cause they are rated at 100w.. and i have other speakers that are 30w.. and they almost are more powerful than the bose.
It doesn't make sense.

One clue may be that it's the marketing department that writes-up the specs, not the engineers... so they can "spin-it" any way they like!

Power handling is not the only factor in loudness. You also have to consider the speaker's efficiency. Efficiency is defined as the output in Decibels per Watt of input measured at a 1 meter. So a speaker with a high efficiency will put out more sound for a given Watt. Of course there are tradeoffs. To get high efficiency you usually have to sacrifice maximum power handling and/or low frequency extension and/or cabinet size. Likewise, you have to sacrifice efficiency if you want to optimize those other factors. Bose always seems to be most concerned with having consumer friendly small cabinets. So in order reach down to reasonably low frequencies, they must sacrifice efficiency (plus a host of other things I won't get into!).
