I've decided to finish up my Pearl Masters kit with a 16" floor tom. Good news is that I've found the drum I'm looking for, and it's going to cost me just over $200! Problem is that it's a 6-ply MRX, and I have the 4-ply MMX. I'm worried about this drum sounding a lot louder than the others and throwing the image of the drumset off. OTOH, the louder shell may do some good, considering that the floor toms sometimes get burried when recording. Has anyone mixed shells and had good/bad experiences?

I've mixed various shells with few problems.

Since you're adding a 16" - I guessing you have 10", 12" & 14"

I would think a 6 ply on the 16" should not be a problem. As you said, it may provide a slightly more defined attack and less resonance, which is preferred in a larger shell.

For the price I would do it.

That's correct. I'm expanding my MMX rock/fusion kit. A 14" tom just isn't big enough for me. Next up is a rack and some more cymbals.

I'm glad you're getting a floor tom. Alot of guys now use Rack toms instad of floor toms and it just isn't a big enough sound. I believe every kit needs a floor tom and a 16x16 is perfect. It should make a big difference in your sound. And the Ply thickness issue shouldn't make that big of a difference on the lowest tom anyway. Just make sure all the heads match. I've seen some extremes!

Definately. The set just feels like it's not complete. The drum I found is a 16x13", so hopefully that will suffice. (Sort of an odd size.) If I'm not pleased, it will go on eBay!
