Simple question Software for cleaning up old tuff

I was wondering. I don't have a lot of money - But i was wanting to know if I could just buy a simple application to clean up old audio recordings. I have an iMac computer, which doesn't really support a new sound card. But I do have a Stand-alone CD burner. Could I burn the Audio. Put the Disc into the computer and then send the audio through the software - clean up the audio- and then reburn the music with a computer CD-R? I don't really want to buy a whole new computer and sound card and all that just to try and do a little "Old Audio Clean Up" - Any help would be great

By 'clean up', you mean get rid of clicks and scratches and hiss on vinyl?

You'll need a decent soundcard for that (you need decent A/D D/A converters to get the vinyl into a digital format and back out again), and some decent software. Cool Edit's fine, but I've heard from someone here who knows that Sound Forge is better. But the problem I've found with any noise reduction function I've used is that the worse the condition of the original, the more it degrades the overall sound to try to remove the offending noise. Getting rid of clicks and pops is great, but getting rid of hiss sometimes leaves your sound kind of hollow - so much has been removed.
