I am looking to build a Y- cable to mix two line signals before going to one track on a 4-track. would this be possible by wiring resistors into an xlr connector? the signals would be coming straight off of the mic pre so I could adjust levels there. if this is possible, what values should be used and how well do they need to be matched? should there be a capacitor involved for any reason?

To mix two single-ended line level output you can use a pair of 10k resistors, one each in series with the outputs, joined to feed the subsequent input. If the signals are balanced do the same for the plus and minus signals. No capacitors are needed. Let me know if you need more clarification. Also see this, which does not show what you asked, but may be interesting to you anyway.
