The Next Vanilla Ice
I just recently purchased a Studio Projects C1 and a program called Antares Microphone Modeler. I want to use the C1 with the program but they don't have the Studio Projects C1 in either of the modeled or the source mics (I even checked the web updates).

So what mic's resemble the Studio Projects C1? I don't have that many mics so I really wouldn't know.

Btw, I love the C1, its everything you guys said it was.

U87

Everybody says they can't tell it from a U87 (I have my doubts though), so why not start with that?

;)

I've tried out a Neumann U67 & U87 and I can tell the difference between them and the Studio Projects C1 right off the bat. The C1 is great for the price but it is no U87.

I agree, I've heard only samples, but the difference is clearly audible. The U87 is much smoother and warmer sounding.

The U87 is a great mic. Hell, I own two, but the trouble with them is low output, and they always seem to need boosts at 80Hz, and high frequency between 10, 12 and 15Khz, depending on the vocalist. Are they worth the price? Maybe yes to some, and maybe no to others, but I really wish most of you would consider the C3 as the comparison to the 87 because the C3 is much more silky in the upper end, and tighter in the low end.

The C1 is a big sound and very good for mulitple applications, especially weak vocalists. The C3 is just another class above the C1, but everyone seems to only want to pay attention to the C1.

I have never compared our C1 to the U87, but others have. The C1 is a great mic that needs no eq. It is best employed as it is. If you ever feel you have to eq a C1, then the mic is not in the correct position. I voiced the C1 for that reason so it would sound great with no eq. At $299.99, the mic is probably the best sounding mic at two to three times its price.

Antares has not modeled the C1 yet. Perhaps they will some day. If you ask them to, I am sure they will.

unless of course you want your C1 to sound like an SM57. No placement trick is gonna make that happen.

Not to say that the Studio Project mics are bad, based on the samples I've heard I'd choose them over some much more pricier mics anytime and If there was a place I could get them here for a reosnable price I'd get probably get the C3 right away. At the moment the price for C1 here is about $400 so it's a bit rediculous.

I never tried to put Studio Projects down incase any of you thought that at any point in this discussion.

I love the C1 mic to death and I would recommend it to anyone that are looking into microphones right now and are on a budget. The C1 is probably the best mic, in my opinion that you can get under $500 that I have tried (excluding the C3).

I plan on buying a C3 or maybe even a T3 later this year but I bought this C1 to see what all the hype was about and now I find myself telling everyone about it.

Great Job Mr. Hyatt!

for what it's worth i got a C3 in a few days ago and to my untrained amateur ears at least, it beat my AT4033(same price range) hands down. I'm now using the C3 for vocals, plus it has switchable patterns. The C3 through mindprint envoice sounds pretty good without any processing or effects, not so for the AT4033. Only thing is the piece of bandsaw cut block foam in the chintzy "flight case" it came in looked a bit crummy. Yeah, i know that's nit-picking.

I've heard the C3 described as essentially a C1 with switchable patterns, pad etc.

So, the C1's actually brighter than the C3?

C1 for 299.00

You should see how much I paid for mine dude. It was worth every penny Ill tell you that much.

Thought I would jump in on this one. The C3 is actually quite different than the C1. The C1 is a very "Big" sounding mic. As a general purpose mic, it is hard to beat, but we all have our opinions.

The C3 is much more subtle. The mid and high freqs are much silkier and smooth, while the low end is there, it is not nearly as apparent as the low end of the C1. The patterns are dead on, really accurate, and the C3 is killer on acoustics and loud amplifiers. I think it is best for vocalists with good mic technique and especially great for female vocals.

I know your not complaining truckerdave, and I do agree the cutouts need to be better, but we put all our dollars into the mic. They really do cost us way more than if I decided to buy mics from those other companies, so to keep them as affordable as possible, we do not spend much on the case or shockmount, but the mount does work. In fact, I like the small size mount because I can get them in tight places like drum kits that you can't with those big spider mounts.

Anyway, the C3 and T3 are really much better mics than the C1, but everyone keeps going back to the C1. I think that is because of the price, but at about $350.00, the C3 is way better than most $1K mics.

Cyan, I asked the manager of the store where I bought my C1 about how
it compared to the Rode NT1000 soundwise (he has a great ear).
Anyway, he said that the NT1000 seems to work better for female singers,
and that even then he preferred the C1 for both sexes.
For anyone who records instruments in addition to vocals, the C3 and T3
would be the best choice because of the additional patterns.
Therefore, for about $50 extra, at least get the C3!

I agree about the NT1000 sounding better on a female voice.

My girlfriend and I had a chance to auditon some mics last week..... NT1000, AKGC3000, AT4033, MXL2001, and a MXL603S. I'm looking forward to trying the C1 sometime.

Please explain Alan......

You say the C1 needs no EQ. How can this be when everyones voice is going to be different and the music will be different. My voice always requires some eq no matter what mic I use. Even your C1. Am I doing something wrong? I can see no EQ if your just recording voice and acoustic guitar, but to fit it into a mix, I have always used some eq. The C1 seems to lack some Hi end in my vioce. But it could be the Joemeek pre just coloring the sound.
any Ideas?
www.mp3.com/Richard_Bischoff New song called "Mission" using the C1. I'd like to try out a C3 some day.

For me I say the C1 does not need eq, and I have been told this by many. I designed it that way because everytime I use a U87, I have to add a good deal of eq, so I wanted to create a mic that needed little or no eq. I can't say if its the Meek or not. You can always try another mic pre, but the Meek is a good unit and I like the sound of it, but then I should...

If your not getting high end on a C1, your probably right up on the mic, so back away a few more inches and see what happens, because the C1 has a good deal of high end so experiment with your placement of your voice. You may prefer the C3, but I am not pushing you to buy one. Perhaps the dealer who sold you the C1 would let you try a C3. It has more presence on the top end.
