sigh...win98 reinstall

Time to do it again - the signs are cropping up like acne. This time round though, I have a humongous D drive in my computer, so am I right in thinking the drill goes something like this?

1 Copy everything but Win98 from the C drive to the D drive.

2 Uninstall and reinstall Win98.

3 Copy everything back to the C drive afterwards.

Can it really be that simple?
 
I don't believe this will work. Your Windows Registry will not know where your programs are located, nor any of the settings associated with them.

I guess you could copy your current registry and then replace the new one after your install with the old one - but I suspect this might have the effect of just bringing back your original problems.

I'll let some of the more "informed" members of this forum comment further on this - but my feeling is you will need to reinstall all your application software as well.
 
I'm afraid dachay2tnr is right, as far as I know. The main reason for needing to reinstall at all is probably related to the registry having old junk in it. I'm afraid the only safe thing is to reinstall Win 98, reinstall all your apps, and then replace all your working directories with projects, sounds, documents. and whatever other data you've generated.

Before you do this you might want to take note of all your custom settings in all your application software. Also you might have a mailbox and address book for your email client, your browser preferences, and stuff of this nature. Also networking settings for an ethernet card and/or a modem. I'm probably forgetting stuff... It's a big pain going through all this but better safe than sorry.

Everyone seems to forget to back them up when they reinstall.
 
You might want to add "patches" to list as well.

Seems like I frequently encounter a problem, download a patch or new driver that fixes it, and promptly forget about it... until I do an HD format and reinstall. Suddenly the problem(s) come back, and you forget exactly how you fixed it the first time.

Lately I've taken to keeping a CD-RW with copies of any new downloads on it. That way at least I have a copy of the patch should I ever need it again.
 
Sounds like you'd benefit from a dual boot setup, and just dedicate one partition to "audio only" stuff.
 
Cool thread, I'm gettin ready to wipe everything clean & reinstall as well, mainly because I've never done it and I,ve had plenty of crap in and out in the past 2 years.
These are good questions, and I've been creating a CHECKLIST of what needs to be backed up when starting over.
My question is:
Does there exist a site or source on the web dedicated to just these type of question? i.e the retards guide to backing up-reformatting-&reinstalling your operating system.

I think you'll find all the info you need here. Try a couple of search queries and you'll get more info than you care to read.

Emeric wrote a "dual boot for non-geeks" guide and there is plenty of threads about partitioning, formatting options, windows flavours and setups etc.

I know it's too late to try this this time around, but looking to the next time you'll be faced with this:
How about simply doing a clean install of EVERYTHING, and then save a copy of your registry and your Windows/System directory? It'll easily fit on one CDR.
Then when trouble crops up, just use the old versions of these. Should be really fast to revert to them.
