sidechains and key inputs

sidechains and key inputs... i know nothing about them...but they seem to be the answer to something i'd like to do for a sort of fucked up track

snare track needs to be replaced...but the kick bleed is a tad to loud....

short of doing all the manual replacing...it seems that i would like to work this....

assuming i'm using the basic pro-tools gates and comps and such....

have the kick drum track trigger a gate to close on the snare track...
the best i've been able to do, seemingly, is make the gate open off of the kick drum track....


help....for a poor fool
 
You need what's known as a ducker. Many better gates have this feature (though I don't know about any software gates). It basically works opposite of a gate: when the ducker is triggered, it attenuates the signal or silences it completely, depending on how its set up. A good example of a ducker in a real-world application would be somewhere like a restaurant or on the radio, where music is playing but when someone speaks into a microphone the volume of the music automatically decreases.

What you would do is insert the ducker on the kick channel. The snare would get sent to the key input. Every time the snare hits it triggers the ducker, which in turn attenuates the volume of the kick drum signal.

Wait, when you say "kick drum bleed", do you mean the snare is bleeding too much into the kick track, or the kick is bleeding too much into the snare track? Either way, a ducker should still achieve the result you're looking for.
 
use a comp with a side chain. set the threshold quite low and a real high ratio, so that when the kick comes thru, the comp on the snare will register about 20 or 30dB of gain reduction.

in PT, you'll need to set your key or side chain to be a buss, so buss out your kick on say aux 1 and have that as the key input to your snare's comp.


get dynamics 3 from digidesign.com, its free and frickin awesome (if you don't have eq3 get that as well)

the only two plug-ins ive found that have duckers are the Serato rane, which doesn't seem to fly for LE

and the sony oxford...and lucky me...i dont have an ilok:D
 
looks like a shitty situation ork..

what the hell, bust out a MIDI track and click that pencil everytime you see the peak rise.. should take a good 3 hours or so ;)
 
haha well...i know i can sit there and manually fuck-u-late it until it's where i need it to be....

but this seems like something that is reasonable done (hell it's got a name! ducking!) and that it could be very useful in the future for any number of things
 
I didn't quite get what you were describing in the first post but.. you can do a ducking with a comp/limiter. This might get you there.

Take the signal you want to keep and mix it hot over the one you want to duck. Run a mix of the two of them into a compressor. Play with attack and release to get the in-out time balance, then threshold, ratio and the mix of the two will be the depth and relative volume controls.

Downside- slightly harder to setup, no dedicated 'hold' duration like on a gate, (although I did see a comp plug with hold once -anyone know where the hell this thing is please call me! I want it for bass guitar! :) ).
