Sidechain Question

I have an HHB compressor and a mackie 24-8 mixer. the HHB has sidechain. From what I understand, the sidechain function is a way to send signal that is being compressed to another place, possibly for further processing. I am, however, not quite sure how to use this function and how it will ultimately effect the overall sound. I could use some advice on the subject. I have read quite a few books and have a basic idea, however, in practical terms, fo someone doing mostly midi synth and drum machine recording, where would the side chain function most likely have a use?

...or, you can take part of the signal you are compressing and eq it (say, boost the shit out of the highs), and add it into the threshold control circuit, (called side chain). Now you have raised the volume of the highs so the compressor thinks they are 'too loud' and turns them down, (but only then.)
This is dymamic eq- a de-esser.
Do the same thing at 2K might make a good 'guitar-too-shrill-er'

Actually, all this assumes the signal isn't jumping up and down radically in volume to begin with, in which case you might want some gereral compression first.

That was fun. It's always good to brush up on the basics.:)
see ya.

Another way you can use it is you can crack open your cable and reverse the tip and the sleeve so you can connect it to your mixer w/only one cable using the insert. But you can only get it on one or all the channels(using the master insert).

What's that you said? Someone wants to buy a duck??
