Sick of the terminology

Freakin' sweet
I have given up for the time being on recording using an HD24 w/ mixing desk and external processing (EQ, compression, etc.), but I am sick and tired of the abbreviation "DAW".

It just... it just makes me think you are retarded when you use it. Perhaps it's because it sounds similar to "duhh", or perhaps it reminds me of that annoying song they used in those VW commercials in the 90s (dah dah dah!).

Its a computer. With nice specs. But its still a computer. My God.

Aaaaaaand end rant.
 
hahah, I don't even pronounce it out....I just spell out the letters D-A-W

I bet you saw "lawl" for LOL
or "i'm" for IM?

Im going by how people pronounce most acronyms, and assume that when someone says "DAW" they say "Daaaah" not "D A W". If only they would... :rolleyes:

As for lol - I always read it as "lul" or "lowell"... again, just going off how people pronounce em :p

haha, no I've heard people pronounce it that way too. I guess I just always spell out DAW. But then again I seem to mix and match depending on the acronym.

funny though.
Try spelling out DAW instead now, maybe you'll end up liking it better :)
 
Funny you should bring this up - I used to write DAW all the time.. but then I started thinking that using acronyms like this was really inaccurate anyway.. a Digital Audio Workstation is more akin to a 12 track recorder or something, or if referring to a PC, it's more in context of the whole rig than a program like Cubase or Sonar. I used to always see these apps called DAW's, on these forums, in articles, etc. Never liked the way it sounded, as you said it sounds a bit like "duh" or even worse, makes me think of Dawson's Creek or something. Now I just say "recording rig" or "recording application". Much more specific and straightforward.
 
I prefer to call mine the "electronic brain box." Or just "computer." Daw never stuck with me either; might as well call it a Dur . :D

And now "DAW" is even worse in my mind, as I will be thinking of Dawson Leery, and how he ironically always kind of had that "deeeerrrr" look about him (alas, I used to watch that show for some reason).

I like to think of it as the calc-u-tron 2000 :D
 
I never took a shine to "DAW" either. I don't have anything I call it really...PC is about it.
 
Cool. Let's start a campaign to end the use of 'DAW'. I normally use the brand name, or computer, or sequencer anyway rather than 'DAW', so let's end it once and for all... :)

I say 'music pc' but that's because aside from on here, I only know one person who would know what the fuck I'm talking about if I said DAW.

It is fun at work when someone says "what did you get up to last night"

"Mixed a tune. I'm really pleased as all I had to do was high pass the guitars, give the kick a narow but not so narrow boost at 35khz and hard compress the bass. I had a bit of trouble get my hats to blend but got there in the end with a tiny bit of tape saturation. Then my DAW crashed and I had to mixdown all my drum tracks again which took about an hour. I spose if I had recorded in 44.1 instead of 96 my DAW would have been able to handle what Iwas doing but what the hell. Didn't take me long to everything back on track. Oh and I tweaked this sweet reverb setting for my drums. Tonight I'm gonna try and do a hack mastering job...which really means slapping a limiter on my 2-mix. But I like the limiter I have. It's free you know, and bloody good for the price too. Probably not as good as waves plugins but what the hell I don't care. I might also try experimenting with an exciter tonight. Remind me later that I must make sure I listen loud enough because of...well...you know....the nyquist theory and all that."

Everyone's left the room by then. It's totally sweet.

Disclaimer: I doubt that anything I said there was all that accurate but you get the point.
