I use a Shure SM58 for all my recording duties, yet it sounds crap. It always distorts vocals and miked guitar amps. Is it a bad mic or am I doing sommat wrong?

A 58 is a pretty good utility mic. They'll take a shit load of SPL before they fold over. What are you using for a preamp?

I don't use a pre-amp, it's direct into my 4 track mixer. Could this be the problem?

yes, watch your levels on the PC software (I assume?) and not the 4 track....you wont get the best sound out of the 4 track pres but you can get very usable if you play around with it a bit....
