why does the head of the sm57 mic turn but not screw on/off? is there a reason for it?

Are you talking about the little plastic part around the top?
The body screws apart aaround the center and you can see the little wires that connect the mic to its transformer and xlr connector.
Why would you want to take that plastic part off anyway?

is the SM57 made in Mexico.... (that's what I saw on the box)
I was checking them out in my local stores the other day (it cost USD100 here... sigh~)

Yup, some of them are made in Mexico (maybe all these days)
