If you're strapped for cash Id maybe go for the 57. Is works good on tons of stuff. For vocals it works just as good as a 58 in my opinion, but you just has to watch those "P's" and "B's" because the shape of the mic lets you get a lot closer to the diaphragm. For recording vocals though, just try the above technique (wire and panty hose) and you'll be fine. Or you can buy a pop filter for it. I forget how much mine was. I know it was less than 20 bucks though and comes with a clip to hook it to your mic stand. The foam covers that actually go on the mic itself wont really work for reducing pops. Those are mostly windscreens for when you use the mic outside I believe. Pop filters block the sudden peak in sound pressure levels that come from explosive consanent sounds such as P's and B's and such, while allowing the sound to pass through to the mic.
