Shure SM-48 to my soundcard.

i wanna hook up a shure sm 48 to my soundcard, i was gonna go get an XLR to 1/4 inch, (i have a 1/8 to 1/4 adapter in my soundcard) ...my question will the mic work...i was told it would.

should work as long as you use the 'mic' input on your soundcard....(assuming that is has one) - the mic input should have a builtin preamp that will probably sound like $hit, but it will work
 
pratt's right. you need a preamp to bring the signal to line level. When i started recording with my original soundcard, although i knew you needed a pre, the mic input on my soundcard produced some good awful hum and buzzing. I plugged into the line input and it worked. who knows....plug into the mic input first and if it doesn't work try the other one. If neither produce a signal that you're happy with, look into buying a soundcard for recording. You can get a decent solution for right around $100 that sounds like it will satisfy your needs.

thats bad? it sounds better than my current mic.(dont laugh, its a $60cdn Radioshack mic, thats why i want a new one) what shoud i do guys?

Pick up an SM57 or 58 and an Audio Buddy preamp (M-Audio, available from Musicians Friend or 8th Street for about $80.00). Add a 1/4" to a 1/8" adapter into the LINE in (not MIC in) jack of your soundblaster card. Should work and sound pretty good.

Or get the smallest Behringer mixer you can ($65 - 70, 2 inputs) and run the phone out to line in. Same result, although probably not as good as the Audio Buddy preamp. It'll work well enough to get you started. It's about where I am these days - I'm running through a Mackie mixer and it works, but is not really quiet. Click on the web icon and you'll get my page. i called the music store i was going to buy it from, they said that the shure sm 48 to the computer would be slightly better than my radioshack mic because i am degrading the quality going from XLR to 1/4 inch. my question, is it worth the $90 to buy the mic? he said that the quality would be better, and i would have a slight diff? is that possible having a slight diff. from a radio shack to a shure? by the way i cant afford any pre amp right now.

let me add that even though that sound clip i posted sounded decent enuff, its VERY easy to overload a cheap soundcards mic input.....

you may be able to do better with your $90......(is that $90 US or Canadian?).......

what model Radio Shack mike do u have?.....
 
its 90 cdn, and this is my radioshack mic:

so i mite overide the mic input with the shure? will the shure sound better thats all i really want, better quality...

its hard to say if it will be better unless you post a clip of what you are getting now.......

i would bet that the Shure would sound better, but i dont know if it will be enough to justify the $$$$.....
