Just another guy, really.
Scored two, NOS, for a sweet price. Obsolete mic, not made since about the late 80's. These are designed as podium mics, and come with a foam "mouse" that the mic sits in, and is set on the surface of the podium. An unobtrusive, out of the way mic.

Gonna try them as piano mics. Spoke to Shure tech support, the guy said it might work, but he was not (ahem) shure. Set 'em on a little platform mounted inside the upright piano, or within the upright ribs that are visible when looking at the back of the piano. Freq. response drops off after 10,000, but I am gonna try putting one mic closer to the high strings, hoping the closer proximity will boost the weaker high-frequency response. If they don't work as piano mics, I'll just try them as... podium mics!

I see in '06 joel77 said he used 'em on banjos and as choir mics, in the "Members average number of mics" thread. Interesting... might try one as an inside-acoustic guitar mic, if I can find an easy way to mount it and isolate it from the top/back/sides. And maybe it'll work as a harmonica mic?

This promises to be fun.

Here's the only pic I find online...

Shure SM 18B Microphone

What's it rated SPL? This should help you find suitable places to us this microphone ... I'm ahem Shure. :D

Dunno spl, but It worked well in the piano, but was not too strong as a podium mic! Whodathunkit- a podium mic that performs poorly on a podium.

Now that's just plain weird!
But it's not the first time that a microphone that was designed for one application shines in a completely different application.
