Has anyone any opinions on Shure ribbon mics..........specifically the 330?

Very low output, wimpy bass, noisy, sort of a telephone tone, noisy.

Look cool though.

Hmmm. . . I am not worthy to argue with Dan Kennedy, but I have gotten some pretty good vocals out of a Shure 330. I have too much verb on it, but you can listen to it and decide for yourself. I have 2 330's in immaculate condition. Dan, could the one(s) you tried have been broken?? Or possibly just the wrong mic for the job?

Per Scott Dorsey, the Shure 300 is superior to the 315.
There's at least one on e-bay right now.

Operators are standy by! :D

Oops, should have clarified that Scott recommends a transformer
upgrade on the 300, to make it sound much better than a stock
Shure ribbon.

Guys,

Thanks for the comments. I actually just purchased a 330 from a guy in NY on Ebay and will be getting it shipped ASAP.

Unfortunately, my elderly father passed away 2 days ago, so I'm finding "gear hunting" to be a welcome diversion while I deal with funeral arrangements, etc.

Hey BeezoBoy, anybody's worthy to argue with me.

It's just my opinion. I have RCA's, Altecs, Beyers, Royers and the Shure to choose from in the ribbon camp, and the Shure just doesn't hold it's own.

Can it do an interesting sound? Sure, but not often enough to justify a lot of money. I got it for free, which makes it ok.

A bargain even.

I am kind of a snob tho, I use a 74jr as a paperweight on my desk at work. Sounds best that way...

Chris, you have my condolences.

Best of luck with the 330,

Chris

Chris,

My condolences to you as well. My dad died a couple of years ago. That 74jr I mentioned in a previous post was his, it really is much more useful on my desk, because I think of Dad everyday.

Easily now with fond memories, although it's taken a while to get over the sorrow.
