I want to buy a shure sm58 or a sennheiser e835, but i'm not sure which is best...which is more expensive?...but i could afford either.

I never compared these two side by side, but I have compared he SM48 against the e825 They are both a step down in their respective lines. I like the 825 a lot more, much clearer and defined.

I have a beta 58, regular 58, ev something, senn 845 and I use the beta most
I assume this is for a live application

yes, the comparison is for live applications.

I recently did a side by side comparison of the Sm58 and the 835. The 835 has a clearer high end. Works better for my voice. I'm now a Sennheiser user. A lot of people seem to be making this same switch.

They're about the same price (around 100U$D). IMO, the 58 has more proximity effect when used close; it has a more forward-sounding midrange, less high end and less overall clarity than the 835.

onstage, could you mix different types of mics such as the 58 and e835 for vocals without getting any feedback.

Sennheiser every time ... although the real darling of the range is the E845. But the 835 is a very competent mic and there's no way I'd ever choose the SM58 over it for vocals in a live setting ... although laziness means I use a 58 for my acoustic sets I play, cos I never take one of my own mics down. The 58 is a punchy sound, the problem is that you punch with your fist, and not with high frequencies.

The shure line may not be the "best" vocal mics out there, but there are MANY MANY reasons why a Shure 58 or beta 58 may be the "best" choice. Take a look at a previous thread concerning Audix vs Shure mics if you want my many reasons why the Shure 58 is most likely the best vocal mic choice for a live setting.

I prefer the e835 to SM57 or SM58 for live vocals. That's because it suits my voice better, not because it's a better mic. The Sennheisers also have a bigger markup in them, so prices are often negotiable. GC sold me mine for $36 new. They *won't* sell me Shures for anywhere near that price.-Richie

$36 for a new e835? All the more reason to go with the e835! That was a KILLER price... about $3 more than the typical e815 price at a west coast GC...

$36

They are 80 euro ($105) here in ireland - and about the same (£55) in the uk

They are extremely tough mics and have much less proximity than the shures, I prefer the 835 to the shures in a mix but find it often needs a bit of eq to fatten it upon a solo voice.

At $36 I'd have 10 of them :)

Is that the store in Framingham Richie? I must pay a visit next time I'm in BC.

That's Framingham Massachusetts, and the GC I deal with is in Natick, MA. It's fair to say I have some pull at the Natick GC. I also buy Oktava MC012's there for $50 each, and a lot of other stuff- Oktava MK319- $79 Oktava ML52 ribbon- $175. Avalon AD2022- $2000 even. There's a lot of stuff they can't work really good deals on though, and Shure's are one of them. Buying pro audio gear is like buying cars. The price depends on your relationship with sales staff.
I get those kind of prices because I don't buy stuff to audition it and return it, I don't lie to or insult salespeople, and I bought a lot of stuff over 2-3 years. -Richie

That's exactly my experience and why I'm happy using a 58 for my solo gigs. In a muffley low-ceiling venue with a loud PA, I simply can't get a 58 to bring a voice out enough to be heard ... the frequencies just aren't there to be boosted.

My sister lives on washington street now - the natick store is about a 30min drive, might be worth the trip. The washington street store seems to sell out on the specials pretty quick.

Thats my experience too, and that also sounds like most places I play :p

In a live situation, you'll probably do better with the Sennie.

While a well placed/EQ'd SM57 would provide a high quality studio vocal for me, in the less meticulous live setting, the 835 would beat it-hands down.

Recorded an excellent bass-baritone on an 835 once, and the 835 sounded incredible on him. Sometimes the SM57 or 58 will do the same on others. YMMV. The SM57 has a clearer top than the 58 due to foam/grill design.

The AKG D770 (or D790), and D880 can be excellent live mics, or even in the studio. A new D790 is around $120 at GC, but used about $50 or so.

Gave a D790 to a buddy who gave it back (never used it), and plan to take it along for any live gigs. Works quite well on my voice. Better than the brighter Shure Beta's.

Thanks Richie for your prior posts about these AKG's!

IMHO the E835 is a better sounding microphone. I've done side by side comparison, and opted to go with the E835.
