Intermittently I get static and pops. Its not the mixer or the cabling, what could it be? Could someone also tell me after removing the allen screw how do i open the SHURE KSM27 to check for cold solder joint.

Ive got the KSM32 and KSM44...Id think that the bottom is going to twist off counterclockwise...but Ive never needed to open them.

Have you tried another condenser to see if you are having a phantom power issue?

not a phantom problem I've tried it on 3 systems and got same results.
now I removed the allen screw but it still will not unscrew but it jiggles a little maybe a hair but no further

You might try to see if there is a ring around the bottom that you can twist off then see if that will remove the cover.

no ring there just the threads for the spider mic clip do your mics have the same?

found it it's a black plastic retaining ring that screws off but you need a special tool - or in my case a butter knife - to remove it safely.
Now on to the circuit board and soldiering job from the factory
ANYBODY have any suggestions on what to look for besides the obvious ---boy these sure are small----

This will happen with cheap cabling or a bad/dirty XLR connection, I have had it happen.

Cheers

Alan.

I just heard someone else discussing a similar problem on another site with a different mic. Someone advised the user to check for bad capacitors on the mic circuit board.

I seems that if you tap lightly on them with your fingernail (while the mic is on) the noise may reveal which cap is going bad. If you know how to do electronic soldering, (correctly) they are easy enough to replace.

I don't know if that is your problem or not. If it's not a loose wire then it may be worth a try.

I bought a KSM27 that was broken (reflected in the price) - could barely hear the audio and there was a tremendous amount of hiss.

That circuit board uses "surface mount" technology, which makes it essentially not workable-on by the hobbyist (at least in my case) - instead, you can just replace the circuit board - Shure sells them for thirty some dollars, I think.

I have a thread here on the subject:

Could be moisture on the diaphragm. Have you tried hanging it right above a 40W light bulb for a little while?

found the problem and this might help others out there!
that black ring that holds the bottom part of the chassis in place (after the allen screw is out) must be screwed on very tight(and it can be a chore for you need a special tool--or in my case I used a butter knife on just one side of the ring) so as there is no movement between the top and bottom of the chassis for if there is you have a grounding problem...with hiss and pops.
I remember a similar problem about 8 years ago with some Earthworks mics I bought and being that I live 10 mins. away I just went over and they helped me right out - really nice guys over there and really Really nice mics.
Being that the grounding is transferred through the metal of the outside housing just a slight brake at the point where they meet when you screw the top and bottom together you have a grounding problem. just unscrew a bit and reset by screwing it back together hard.

If anyone needs more help on this (with other mics also)please don't hesitate to reply to this thread and I'll help you through the steps and you'll be on your way to having your mic back in to action!
Peace
Henry

Didn't Shure discontinue that mic due to quality problems?
