Hey everyone. I am looking into getting one of these (KSM44). I will be replacing my Studio Projects C1 (I would keep the C1 but I need the cash to help pay for the KSM44). I am looking for any reviews you may know of on this mic. IF any of you have used this mic and can tell me what you thought of it... well that'd be just awesome. And even better if anyone has a recording I can hear where they used it, I'd be ecstatic! My use for this mic will be Acoustic Guitar and Male Tenor Vocals. I'll be running it into an M-Audio DMP3 Preamp and then on into my Delta 44 and then into Cubase. Any help you guys can offer is much appreciated! Thanks so much.

I don't think you'd be disappointed. It would be a very wise and safe purchase. It gets a lot of very respected people's endorsements.

not to try and hijack the thread, but if anyone has some opinions on the KSM27 (especially compared to the SP C1 and B1), that'd be great. The KSM44 is the better sounding more expensive version of the KSM27 -- so the info could still be useful.

Here is a page from Shure with some blurbs about the KSM44 -- everything I have read about it has been fantastic.

thanks man, those vox sound pretty clean from what I can tell. Anyone with maybe something where the vocals are more forward I'd appreciate it. Thanks so much!

I think I need search no longer. I just read the review that solidified my decision. I'm going to pick one up and try it out at home. I'm pretty sure I won't be returning it :)

BTW, you can pick these up on EBAY new for $550. I see them all the time there.

Even some unrespected people like the KSM44. :D

I have a pair of 44's..I like them alot.I just used them tonight on overheads.I've had some good luck with them on vocals also

hey henry, could you post or pm me some of your songs? especially what you've used them on vox for. Thanks!

I have used the 44 on many different acoustic instruments with good luck, especially good on mandolin. You see many big name acoustic bands performing with the large diaphram KSM series on TV, usually the 44s.

I don't know if this is exactly what you are looking for, but...

I while back I did a mic test at a store. I tested several mics by singing a short part of a song into it. The KSM44 was one of them as well as the C1. Here is a link to that test:

Hope this helps...

Love it

I bought a KSM44 last spring for vox and acoustic guitar and it is very nice. Using the different polar patterns you can get a wide variety of sounds...note that it is very hot and can overload some cheap pres (unless you use the pad).
I highly reccomend it :)

Thanks Harold. I'm definitely getting this mic. I really really appreciate everyone's help. Especially those of you who had audio samples. Thank you!

Harold your samples were so good I've emailed you and suggested you start a new thread with them.
I was really supprised by how much low mid boost the TLM 103 has and I think I may start looking for an 87A.
Do you think the part where you sing "sweet home.." was overloading the preamp when you tested the KSM44, cause if it wasn't I found a pronounced mid sound, almost like a harmonic or perhaps a resonance of the mike body?? and it was kind of bothering. Most of the other mikes had it too, except for the Neumann. ( which I would buy if I had the dough )
Great voice too :)
Oh ya, I have to mention that I've not had a chance to listen to your samples thru good spkrs. just my little puter monitors.

Old Crow,

Thanks for the kind words.

I don't know if the pre was overloading on the KSM or not. You see, the Shure and the Neumann were both recorded at a Guitar Center store. I went there to look for a mic. I tried a bunch and narrowed them down to the KSM and the TLM. I them asked the sales guy if I could record them onto a Korg D1600 that they had there. I went thru the Korg's pres. I then burned it to CD and took it home...where I did the same test with my mics into my D1600.

The reason I do not know if I was clipping the pres was because the salesguy was actually watching the board. However, I would say that I wasn't as the track was no where near clipping. I normalized each track to even them out some.

As far as making the test a seperate thread, well...I did. You see, the test thread was originally a blind test that I had folks participate in to help me decide on which to buy. It was kind of fun.

By the way...I ended up buying the Neumann. (Though I still want a Shure :) )

justharold,

I have both a TLM103 and a KSM44. They are very complimentary to each other and seem to be able to cover most vocal chores. You made a great decision with the Neumann, and maybe add a KSM44 in the future?

Have fun,
Terry

I was actually really impressed by both (and I listened to them against some pretty tough competition). Some other mics I tried were the BLUE Dragonfly, Blueberry and Mouse. I also tried the Rode NTK and a Groove Tubes thing. I think there were a couple others as well...

The Neumann and the Shure stood out to me.

It was funny, because originally when we started pulling mics out of the case, I asked the salesguy about the Shure. He told me that it wouldn't match up to the rest of the mics we had chosen. After we had gone thru them all, I then told him to get the Shure anyway. We were both blown away by it.

I have also just recently obtained an AKG C414B-ULS. I like it alot! It remonds me of the KSM some in it's brightness and tight bottom end.
