It is an instrument/amp mic that works on some vocals as well (I use it alot for live vocals)
It's like an SM75 on steroids.

The Beta 57 differs from the 57 in that it's a bit brighter sounding, and has a hypercardioid pickup pattern instead of cardioid.

I'm a big fan of the beta57 - just somehow works with my voice in a way that a regular 57 doesn't.

If you have a choice, I would go with the beta 57a. In general it sounds a little better to me than the beta 57. The beta 57a is just a little newer, and is a little more durable as well (grill design etc....).

More props for the Beta 57. I originally got it to use as my amp mic and a Beta 58 to use as my live vocal mic....now the Beta 57 is my live vocal mic It has also done a great job on every amp i've used it on. Sure, other mics could probably do better on certain amps, but this one does a good job all the way around.

I have two B57s that I bought the 58 screen for. Very clever, I can switch between B57 & B58 as I need!

I am getting to really like my Beta 57a again.
I also have the Shure beta 58a and though it has more of a fuller sound it can come accross a bit naselly especailly when one has a cold.
I have a nose cold so I switched back to using the Beta 57a and it works great.
I find it has a nice smooth high end and sounds sweet .
